The Divine Legend of Yamunotri

Daughter of the Sun God
Yamuna is believed to be the daughter of Surya Dev (Sun God) and sister of Yama (God of Death). The temple enshrines a black marble idol of Goddess Yamuna, said to be bathed daily in the nearby thermal springs.

Asit Muni’s Ancient Connection
The sage Asit Muni meditated here for centuries, his ashram ruins still visible near the temple. Legend says he bathed daily in both Yamuna and Ganga until old age, when Yamuna split into two streams to meet him.

The Eternal Flame of Divya Shila
Pilgrims first worship the Divya Shila rock pillar before entering the temple, as it’s believed to be the actual origin point of Yamuna’s divine energy.
